Abstract
There is a challenge and necessity for geotechnical engineers to deal with different types of soils including different types of problematic soils. Swelling soil is one of those problematic soils which expands once it contacts with water and having a large volume change. Swelling soil is widely spreadded in Egypt and many other areas all over the world. This kind of soil can be characterized by high compressibility, low shear strength and consequently low bearing capacity which causes excessive settlement leading to several damages to buildings, foundation and may be structural failures for different types of structures. So, geotechnical engineers should intervene and use one of the different soil improvement techniques to modify the properties of this kind of problematic soil.
Many soil improvement techniques can be applied to improve the shear strength and decrease the swelling potential to mitigate any resulting problems from this soil. In this paper, several techniques that can be used to improve the swelling soil are investigated and presented.
